German Patterns Workbook

Intuitive Language Learning Series.
German Language Patterns.

What is the Intuitive Language Learning series?

I’ve been learning foreign languages all my life (English, German, and French) and teaching English to adults for over 25 years. My native languages are Ukrainian and Russian. Drawing on both my learning and teaching experience, I developed the Intuitive Language Learning series for learning German and English.

The core idea is simple: start with meaning, then move directly to how that meaning is expressed through natural language patterns. Instead of focusing on grammar rules or vocabulary in isolation, I focus on the patterns, structures, and sentence models that native speakers actually use.

Usually, languages are taught through grammar first and vocabulary second. Vocabulary is often organised by topics such as travel, health, business, or food.

However, there are more fundamental meanings that we need across all topics. These are universal communicative meanings that we use constantly, regardless of the situation.

What do I mean by “meaning”?

By meaning, I refer to everyday communicative intentions such as facts, opinions, attitudes, feelings, decisions, certainty, uncertainty, and cognitive frames that we use constantly without even noticing.

For example, we need to express intentions, uncertainty, opinions, attitudes, facts, achievements, assumptions, and many other everyday meanings.

For example, if I want to express achievement or success, the workbook first gives you the category Achievement, followed by a natural German language pattern: Es gelingt mir, das zu lösen.

The third column provides the English translation. The format is simple and easy to follow:

 Meaning                                German Pattern                                         English translation

Achievement, Success          Es gelingt mir, das zu lösen.                      I manage to solve it.

Ich schaffe es, rechtzeitig zu kommen.      I manage to arrive on time.

 or another meaning:

General accepted opinions.  Es gilt als sicher.                                       It is considered to be safe.

  It is considered that …

At a more advanced level, you may want to express more subtle meanings, such as cognitive framing, abstraction, reduction, concept packaging, nuanced attitudes, and many others.

The list of possible meanings is probably endless, and learning them randomly is not very efficient.

Why is this series intuitive?

Because I have intuitively selected the German language patterns that learners need most often and organised them by level of complexity—from beginner to advanced.

Whether you are learning German for everyday communication, work, travel, or exams, these patterns help you express yourself in German across all topics.

Currently, German Patterns Workbook 1 for beginners is available free of charge.

The advanced German Patterns Workbook 2 will be available in July 2026.

The English Patterns workbooks will be available in August and September 2026.

How are the workbooks structured?

Each section contains:

- an intuitive category of meaning or idea;
- a German language pattern presented in a complete sentence;
- the English translation of that sentence.

In addition, there is space for you to write your own sentences using each pattern.

What this workbook is (and is not)?

This is intentionally not a traditional grammar book or textbook.

Instead, it follows a more natural approach to language learning—from meaning to expression.

There are no abstract grammar explanations or technical linguistic terminology. Patterns are always presented in complete sentences because language is learned most effectively through meaningful use rather than abstract theory.

It is assumed that you already know the basics of German grammar and can use familiar structures in different tenses. This series focuses on expanding your range of German language patterns and the meanings they express.

How to use this workbook?

Study one category each day, learn the different patterns within that category, and write your own examples—ideally based on your real life.

Try using each pattern in different tenses, such as the present, past, and perfect, to make it part of your active German.

What’s next?

The Intuitive Language Learning series will gradually expand with new workbooks for learning German and English, from beginner to advanced levels.
